Environmentalists Urge EPA to Issue Criteria For More Hudson River PCB Dredging

Environmental groups urged the Environmental Protection Agency May 5 to develop clear and specific criteria for whether additional dredging by General Electric of polychlorinated biphenyls in New York's Hudson River is warranted. The groups want the EPA to include the criteria in the five-year review of the project, where dredging was virtually completed in October of 2015. The EPA should identify the criteria by which "it thinks the remedy is either successful or the point at which it's not successful and additional action is required," Daniel Raichel, a staff attorney with the Natural Resources Defense Council, said at the first in a series of community meetings to gather public comment on the five-year review of the project. Raichel said "quantifiable measures" on concentrations of PCBs in fish and specific time frames for when fish in the river will be safe to eat are needed.
