EPA, Pennsylvania Sue PBS Coals For Alleged Clean Water Violations

Federal and state environmental regulators in Pennsylvania have sued PBS Coals Inc. and four affiliates in federal court, alleging the coal companies violated clean water regulations by dumping excessive amounts of slurry, wastewater and other pollutants into Pennsylvania waterways (United States v. PBS Coals, Inc., W.D. Pa., No. 3:16-cv-00091, 4/19/16). The Environmental Protection Agency and the Pennsylvania Department of Environmental Protection filed the complaint April 19 in the U.S. District Court for the Western District of Pennsylvania. The defendants include PBS Coals, of Friedens, Pa., and four Pennsylvania-based affiliates-Berlin-based Croner Inc.; Somerset-based Elk Lick Energy Inc.; and Friedens-based Quecreek Mining Inc. and RoxCoal Inc. The companies operate in Somerset, Indiana and Cambria counties.
