Environmental Justice Safeguards to Expand In 2017 Under Interior Department Strategy

The Interior Department would expand its safeguards to ensure consideration of low-income, minority or tribal communities under its draft Environmental Justice Strategic Plan for 2016 through 2020. Each of the agency's bureau-level offices would establish plans in 2017 to improve consideration of environmental justice in their programs, and the department would evaluate proposed regulations for potential impacts on those communities, the strategic plan said. Additionally, the department would issue new regulations and update existing rules and policies on environmental justice, such as revising its agency memorandum on the National Environmental Policy Act later this year, the plan said.
