Three Senators Urge Fast EPA Action On Sewage Dumping in Great Lakes

Three senators are urging the Environmental Protection Agency to quickly implement congressio-nally mandated requirements for municipal treatment facilities to notify the public of sewage dumped into the Great Lakes. Sen. Mark Kirk (R-Ill.) and two others asked EPA Administrator Gina McCarthy in a letter for a detailed plan and timeline for implementation of these public notice requirements. The EPA was required by Congress under the fiscal year 2016 omnibus spending law (Pub. L. No. 114-113) to implement these requirements within two years. "We must ensure the public is informed immediately and every time that sewage is dumped into our water, putting the public heath at risk," Sens. Kirk, Richard Durbin (D-Ill.) and Rob Portman (R-Ohio) said in the March 1 letter.
