EPA Outlines 2017-19 Enforcement Priorities, New Focus on Water, Industrial Accidents

The Environmental Protection Agency announced Feb. 18 it will have seven National Enforcement Initiatives in 2017-2019, including two new ones-efforts to reduce water pollution from industries and the risk of accidental releases at chemical and industrial facilities. Five of the agency's current National Enforcement Initiatives [NEIs] are being continued in the next three-year period. One of them, reducing hazardous air pollutants, is being expanded to include a focus on large storage tanks and hazardous waste facilities. The others continuing are reducing air pollution from the largest sources, such as power plants; enforcing environmental laws in the area of energy extraction; reducing pollution from raw sewage and contaminated stormwater; and preventing animal waste from contaminating surface water and groundwater.
