Man Sentenced to 20 Years in Prison, Ordered to Pay Back Biofuels Scam Gains

A New Jersey man was sentenced to 20 years in prison for a biofuels fraud scheme that netted more than $55 million in profits over two years, the Justice Department said Jan. 8 (U.S. v. Furando, S.D. Ind., No. 1:13-cr-00189, 1/7/16). Joseph Furando and co-defendants also were ordered to pay more than $56 million in restitution by Judge Sarah Evans Barker of the U.S. District Court for the Southern District of Indiana in a sentencing hearing Jan. 7. The Justice Department said in a news release that under the terms of a plea agreement, Furando must forfeit "the fruits of his crime, which include a Ferrari, other cars, a million-dollar home, artwork, a piano and two biodiesel powered motorcycles."
