Energy Department Seeks Public Comments On Siting Process for Nuclear Waste Storage

The Energy Department is seeking public comment on its siting process for long-term nuclear waste storage repositories for commercial and defense-generated nuclear waste. The department agency will publish a request for public comment for the siting process in the Federal Register on Dec. 23, according to a Dec. 21 blog post. The public stakeholder process comes after the department announced its plans in March to move forward with the development of a separate repository for defense nuclear waste. The consent-based process is how it will confirm communities, tribes and states are "comfortable with the location of future storage and disposal facilities before they are constructed," the department said in the blog post. DOE will also hold public meetings to obtain comments throughout the country during 2016, with the first meeting taking place in January in Washington, D.C.
