Oil Barge Company to Pay Millions More for Massachusetts Spill

An oceangoing oil barge company's legal deal with state and federal officials to restore bird populations that had plummeted following a large Massachusetts oil spill took 14 years to work out. Bouchard Transportation Co. Inc. and the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service, National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration, Massachusetts and Rhode Island hammered out the proposed consent decree, filed Oct. 19 in the U.S. District Court for the District of Massachusetts. The decree calls for the company to pay an additional $13 million on top of an earlier $6 million to restore bird populations.
