Illinois Attorney General Kwame Raoul on Tuesday sued Dynegy Midwest Generation LLC over groundwater pollution allegedly caused by coal ash from a now-closed plant.Dynegy, a subsidiary of Vistra Corp., violated the state’s groundwater standards at the coal-fired plant in Vermilion County, Ill., Raoul and Vermilion County State’s Attorney Jacqueline Lacyalleged in their complaint. Dynegy shut the facility in 2011.The burning of coal created the ash, which was placed into surface impoundments, or “ponds,” on the site, the complaint alleged. Over the life of the facility, more than 3 million cubicyards of coal ash was stored on site, according to the complaint.
