Florida lawmakers have moved to block local governments from banning certain ingredients found in many sunscreens.The measure would preempt a ban set to take effect in 2021 in Key West. City commissioners there voted in February 2019 to prohibit two sunscreen ingredients-octinoxate and oxybenzone-that may damage coral reefs.Sponsors of the bill said it would be irresponsible to limit access to sunscreens if the Food and Drug Administration hasn't ruled that the ingredients are unsafe, even though Florida's signature reefs are struggling to survive the effects of climate change, pollution, disease, and tourism. The FDA's mission is focused on public health and doesn't extend to the environment.
