EPA Proposing New Pesticide for Beekeepers (1)

The EPA is proposing to register a new pesticide application to assist beekeepers.The pesticide is based on a strain of a the Bacillus thuringiensis bacteria and will be used to prevent andcontrol wax moths in beehives. The registration proposal was made Thursday.Along with varroa mites, wax moths are a significant pest for honeybees. Adult female moths enter hivesat night and deposit eggs in cracks and crevices within the hive. The moth larvae then burrow through anddestroy the honeycombs as they feed on the wax, pollen, and larval bees.
