Tetra Pak, World’s Top Food Packager, Seeks 100% Renewable Power

Tetra Pak Inc., the world's biggest food packaging firm, aims to cut greenhouse gas emissions 58 percent by 2040 and use renewables for 100 percent of its energy by 2030. Tetra Pak has three avenues for shrinking its carbon footprint: installing solar panels where it's feasible, buying renewable power from suppliers where it's not, and increasing energy efficiency. Reducing its footprint is also part of being a sustainable company, Fielkow said. Plan Development The company drafted its emissions plan under a program called Science Based Targets, overseen by the United Nations and environmental groups. Other companies in the program include Guess Inc., Mitsubishi Corp. and Novartis AG. While the emissions goal is a positive, Tetra Pak should also address physical waste, said Pascale Fioretti, managing partner at La Holista in Vietnam, which sells health foods and products like biodegradable bags.
