Groundwater Science and Policy: An international overview

'Groundwater Science and Policy' comprises a weighty collection of contributions covering a wide range of topics related to hydrogeolo-gical science, management and policy. It is edited by Dr Philippe Quevauviller of the European Commission's DG Environment and is published hot on the heels of the adoption of the EU Groundwater Directive in December 2006. It comprises 34 papers, compiled into 11 chapters that cover topics from the European regulatory framework for groundwater and stakeholder interactions, through groundwater monitoring and characterisation, to groundwater modelling, ecology and management. Reading through the contents list the reader anticipates a wide-ranging overview of current hydrogeological science and management issues, and individually a good number of the chapters included do provide a useful overview and review of their subject area. The book is not, however, a comprehensive review of the subject, but rather a collection of papers that describe a large number of recent EU-funded research projects, supplemented by additional invited papers that fill some of the gaps. At times it feels like a very long sales pitch.
