The presentations offered at yet another excellent Green Monday event centred on the experiences of two corporate heavyweights - both of which are rarely far from the news. Aviation has been at the core of much of the climate change debate, so it was good hear from Colin Matthews, CEO of BAA, who offered a fairly robust defence of the third runway planned for Heathrow. His argument is that an extra runway will reduce waiting times for aeroplanes sat on the tarmac, and reduce the amount of taxiing done in the air as planes wait to land -activities that are responsible for much of the emissions associated with aviation. "It is an environmental outrage that planes queue with their engines running," he said.
