Social performance

The social performance index declined marginally to 2.86 in the year to March 2011. It has now fallen by 4.5% since March 2008, the earliest comparable year. The reasons for the decline are complex. Social issues are one of the three main foundations of sustainable development. For business, this comprises a wide variety of issues, including labour standards, equality and discrimination, child labour, worker representation and community engagement. Many of these are captured in the index calculated by FTSE.
