The carbon intensity of road freight transport increased markedly in 2009. Emissions intensity climbed to 129 grams of carbon dioxide equivalent per tonne-km, up from the historic low of 121g in 2007. The rise reverses an improving trend that showed virtually no breaks since at least 1994. The iong-term improvements have been achieved due to a complex mix of better technology and smarter logistics management. One word explains the deterioration since 2007: recession.
