Business leaders may be forgiven for thinking that the environmental community should be celebrating widespread acknowledgement of a universal truth that they have been advocating for many years - that biodiversity matters to our health, well-being and prosperity and, as such, has a tangible value to society. Such validation of the importance of protecting and enhancing our global biodiversity resource is a major advance in safeguarding our environmental future. However, a recent research study commissioned by the Institute of Ecology and Environmental Management (IEEM) has raised some alarming questions about the current capacity of the ecological profession in the UK and Ireland. The research has confirmed what many in the sector have for some time feared: that the specialist skills and competencies that governments and businesses will need to protect this vital natural capital are in worryingly short supply.
