Many readers outwith the United Kingdom know—not least from recent editorials (Johnston, 2005; Tewdwr-Jones, 2005)—of the impact of the Research Assessment Exercises (RAEs) on academic life and knowledge production within academia. RAE 2008 is looming: the Funding Councils (FCs) have published criteria that subject panels will apply when rating departmental research outputs, environments, and esteem indicators; universities are preparing draft submissions; and staff are deciding which four recent publications (or other outputs) to submit as illustrating their 'best work'. Big sums of money (the QR—quality-related—income allocated to universities annually by the FCs) rest on the outcome: some £1.5 billion is distributed annually according to the RAE 'success' of departments, on a very steep sliding scale (for an example, see Johnston, 2006).
