Traditional urban economic theory views cities as a collection of producers, surrounded by residents travelling to work in the center each day. This constellation suggests highly unbalanced commuting flows from every location to the center. The left-hand panels of the figure plot commuting flows between counties in New York City (USA) and between COROP/NUTS-3 regions in the Randstad area (the Netherlands) for the year 2000. Large flows receive higher visual weight by fading smaller ones through to transparency.
