Consumers across the globe encounter 'made in China' labels on a daily basis, but few have much, if any, knowledge of the lives and work experiences of the migrant women in China who produce these consumer goods and make them globally ubiquitous. As conspicuous consumption is newsworthy, international media, perpetually in love with the glamour of transnational capital, seldom make the connection between consumption by the urban rich and the alienation of workers in the global factory whose lives are anything but glamorous, and certainly not newsworthy.
