CITING LEAD STANDARD, CASAC WILL URGE NEW NAAQS REVIEW PROCESS

EPA's top air quality science advisors are firmly rejecting a new agency process for developing national ambient air quality standards (NAAQS) and in a forthcoming letter will outline a different approach for presenting scientific data and soliciting public comment on federal air regulations. Members of the agency's Clean Air Scientific Advisory Committee (CASAC) and its Lead Review Panel argued at a Dec. 12 meeting in Washington, DC, that the NAAQS review process EPA recently used for the first time fails to provide for adequate scientific or public assessment of the agency's proposals.
