TAMPA,FL-EPA's Risk Assessment Forum (RAF)-a group of senior agency scientists who seek to promote and implement consistent approaches on controversial risk assessment issues-will soon consider whether the agency should develop first-time guidance for assessing the ecological risks of contaminants to populations or communities,rather than the current focus on organism-level risks. The move could improve the growing use of ecological risk assessment by focusing on additional factors-such as genetic diversity,population abundance,and species diversity-that assessors say are more relevant for ecological management than the health and persistence of individual organisms.
