Boxer Vows To Reintroduce Asbestos Ban Bill Amidst Activist Criticism

Senate environment committee Chairwoman Barbara Boxer (D-CA) is vowing to reintroduce a controversial Senate asbestos bill amidst criticism from public health officials and environmentalists that the legislation does not adequately limit the use, manufacture and distribution of the carcinogen. At issue is S. 742, a bill the Senate approved in the last Congress. Public health officials and activists had strongly supported the original version of the legislation introduced by Sen. Patty Murray (D-WA), but later withdrew their support after learning of changes Boxer, Murray and Sen. Johnny Isakson (R-GA) made to the bill following negotiations with industry officials.
