OIG Study Criticizing EPA Air Toxics Program Spurs Calls For Major Reform

An EPA Office of Inspector General (OIG) report criticizing EPA's delay implementing long-pending policies to cut air toxics is prompting activists to seek major reform in EPA's air toxics policy such as setting a new baseline for measuring progress, while industry says EPA should simply ramp up its focus on small source emissions.rnEPA is rebuffing calls in the June 24 OIG report to address - in an upcoming report to Congress - specific flaws in its approach to reducing risks from air toxics emissions, but agrees that improving the program is important. The OIG report says the agency has failed to implement key Clean Air Act requirements to cut air toxics 10 years after issuing a broad strategy for reducing toxic air pollution, and also urges EPA to submit its second report to Congress this year.
