Approaches for network monitoring of air toxics compounds have been evolving since the inception of Environmental Protection Agency's(EPA)Urban Air Toxics Monitoring Program(UATMP)in 1987.The UATMP was developed to help State and local agencies characterize the nature and distribution of potentially toxic air pollution in urban areas. The technical aspects of the program are managed through a federal contract(currently contracted through Eastern Research Group(ERG),in Morrisville,NC.)In 1999,the EPA expanded the UATMP to provide for the measurement of additional Hazardous Air Pollutants(HAPs)to support EPA's Government Performance Results Act(GPRA)commitments to reduce air toxics emissions by 75% from 1993 levels in order to significantly reduce the risk of cancer and other serious adverse health effects caused by airborne toxics.UATMP monitoring is still being conducted at more than 25 sites.
