Industry and Defense DEpartment (DOD) officials are stepping up calls for Epa to provide guidance on what conditions must be met before the agency will step away from its use of conservative linear modeling of cancer risks in its chemical assessments, a policy that may force the agency to adopt strict risk values in a host of pending assessments. DOD officials are calling for such a guidance in response to their expectation of Epa's upcoming Integrated Risk Information System (IRIS) assessment for the solvent perchloroethylene (perc), and industry officials are doing the same in response to the agency's recently proposed inhalation risk estimate for the ubiquitous contaminant and com monly-used intermediate chemical, 1,4-dioxane.
