Industry Warns EPA's Platinum Risk Study May Undermine Pollution Controls

Key industry groups are warning that EPA's plan to finalize its draft risk estimate for platinum salts (Pt), which is thousands of times stricter than any other EPA risk estimate, could undermine production of pollution control, health care and other important products and are urging the agency to delay its study until new data is available. The industries' concern comes as the agency is under growing pressure to amend its high profile risk assessment program, known as the Integrated Risk Information System (IRIS), in the wake of a highly critical National Academy of Sciences (NAS) review of its formaldehyde risk assessment.
