EPA To Seek National Academy Review Of Endocrine Testing Methods

EPA officials are asking the National Academies to review the agency's emerging stance on whether to overhaul regulatory testing and assessment methods to better account for many endocrine disrupters' and other chemicals' nonmonotonic dose-response curves (NMDRCs), which often show harm at low doses, given that current methods assume harm increases as the dose rises. Bob Kavlock, deputy assistant administrator for science in EPA's Office of Research and Development (ORD), said during a Dec. 6 meeting of the Academies' Board on Environmental Studies and Toxicology (BEST) that the agency would be asking for advice on the issue. NMDRCs are "an issue we're hoping we can get the Academies' assistance on," he said.
