Groups Cite Novel EPA Equity Analysis To Seek Stricter Duwamish Cleanup

Community advocates are urging EPA to strengthen its proposed sediment cleanup plan for the Lower Duwamish Waterway in Seattle, WA, to require more remedial dredging and are citing the agency's novel environmental justice assessment that found the plan would not adequately protect minority groups. But responsible parties at the site are urging EPA to soften the remedial dredging requirements to ensure a faster, and less costly, cleanup. A coalition of seven community groups stepped up their lobbying effort May 28, releasing an open letter to the city of Seattle, King County and the Port of Seattle - three of four major entities that have likely released contaminants in the 5-mile waterway - saying EPA's plan would not adequately clean up the river.
