EPA Extends Perchlorate Deadline To Complete New Modeling Effort

EPA has further extended its deadline for when the agency will issue a new public health goal for perchlorate levels in drinking water to allow agency and Food and Drug Administration (FDA) scientists to perform complicated additional modeling work, as recommended by the agency's science advisors. Peter Grevatt, director of EPA's Office of Ground Water and Drinking Water told attendees at a conference hosted by the Association of Metropolitan Water Agencies last month that EPA and FDA scientists are working on a new model to support development of the maximum contaminant level goal (MCLG), a necessary value that EPA must develop before beginning work on its enforceable drinking water cleanup standard or maximum contaminant level (MCL).
