EPA Seeks To Limit Diesel Exposures But Declines To Revise Risk Analysis

EPA is declining, for now, to update its decade-old assessment of cancer risk from diesel exhaust exposure -despite new studies showing increased risk and which may, for the first time, allow the agency to quantify cancer risk -and instead is focusing on reducing exposure to the ubiquitous pollutant. During a May 21 agency-sponsored webinar, officials with EPA's Office of Transportation and Air Quality (OTAQ) said they are not planning to request an update of the 2002 Integrated Risk Information System (IRIS) assessment of diesel exhaust, an assessment that environmental justice advocates, including EPA's environmental justice advisors, have long called for EPA to review.
