OTC Eyes Stricter EPA Air Rules For Coatings, Trucks To Meet Ozone NAAQS

The Ozone Transport Commission (OTC) of Northeast and Mid-Atlantic states is urging EPA to tighten its years-old air rule for maintenance coatings and to pursue stricter emissions standards on air pollution from trucks in order to help states attain the agency's ozone national ambient air quality standards (NAAQS). Some states in the region are still striving to meet the 2008 ozone standard of 75 parts per billion (ppb) through state-crafted regulations and say they need stricter federal regulations to help them come into attainment. More areas could also face new burdens in reducing ozone-forming pollutants when EPA decides under an Oct. 1 court-ordered deadline whether to follow through on its proposal to tighten the NAAQS to between 65 and 70 ppb.
