EPA Eyeing Stricter Soil Screening Levels As Interim Lead Policy Measure

EPA is weighing the use of more conservative lead-in-soil screening levels for its Superfund program among other interim measures it is considering as it incorporates updated science and public health recommendations on lead into its cleanup program, according to slides that were to be presented by an EPA official at an Aug. 5 state waste officials forum. "More conservative soil screening levels" is one of a list of "interim recommendations" EPA says it is considering as part of its lead policy development, the slides say. Other measures on the list are to make more routine use of site-specific information; recognize the importance of background levels of lead, particularly in urban areas; address the need to prioritize sites with the highest risk; and conduct five-year reviews in accordance with existing guidance, the slides say.
