State-Led Group Nears Completion Of Guidance On Complex Cleanup Sites

A state-led technical group is soliciting comment on a much-anticipated draft guidance aimed at helping regulators take adaptive measures to speed cleanup at complex contaminated sites and aims to finalize the document by October, coming as the Trump administration has proposed significant budget cuts and as EPA eyes moving sites more quickly off the National Priorities List (NPL). The effort also comes as states are facing greater cleanup responsibilities. Even without budget cuts, states assume 100 percent responsibility for remaining operation and maintenance (O&M) costs at orphan sites after cleanups reach the 10-year mark of operations.
