Senate Panel Clears EPA General Counsel, Chemical Board Nominations

The Senate Environment and Public Works Committee (EPW) voted Sept. 22 to advance the Biden administration's nominee of Jeffrey Prieto to be EPA's general counsel and approved the nominations of three candidates for the U.S. Chemical Safety Board (CSB), despite opposition by some Republicans to Prieto and one CSB nominee. During a Sept. 22 business meeting, the committee voted 12-8 to move forward the nomination of Prieto, overcoming opposition from ranking member Sen. Shelley Moore Capita (R-WV) and several other Republican members of the panel. The advancement to the full Senate came after Prieto's confirmation earlier stalled because Democrats failed to muster enough support due to scheduling conflicts. Prieto is a former top lawyer at EPA, the Justice Department and the Agriculture Department.
