Michigan Governor Presses Air Force To Comply With State PFAS Limits

Michigan's governor is stepping up pressure on the military to comply with state standards for regulating per- and polyfluoroalkyl substances (PFAS) in what could be a test case for states' ability to ensure the military follows state PFAS cleanup standards that are often broader and more stringent than EPA's approach. Gov. Gretchen Whitmer (D) wrote to Air Force Assistant Secretary for Energy, Installations, and Environment John Henderson Sept. 22, urging the service to comply with PFAS standards in the cleanup of the former Wurtsmith Air Force Base. Cleanup of PFAS contamination at the former base has long been in debate between the state and the Air Force. The letter lays out a host of state applicable and relevant and appropriate requirements (ARARs) under the Superfund process for the service to apply in the cleanup - responding to a request from the military service for a list of identified state ARARs.
