Codes of ethics and social responsibility

As the fundamental basis of ethics is social responsibility, it is necessary to ask the general question what duties engineers owe to the community and whether those duties might be promulgated in codes of ethics. To explore this it is appropriate to consider duties of engineers established under the common law and some statutes. One of the most commonly occurring legal duties is that under contract. Each party to a contract has duties and obligations to the other, and an engineer entering into a contract to provide professional services to a client is bound to comply with the terms of the contract.
