One of Australia's most famous sporting icons, the Melbourne Cricket Ground (MCG), has been undergoing a major redevelopment in the last 18 months. Three stands on the northern side of the ground are being demolished, so a new stand can be built to increase the 150-year-old stadium's capacity to 100,000 people and be ready for the 2006 Commonwealth Games. On the surface, this would seem like a straightforward project. But this is far from the truth. The project team must complete the job in a tight construction program, incorporate world-class sustainability practices, and not prevent Melbourne's sport mad locals from watching their cricket and AFL. The $400 million project is being constructed by builder Grocon Constructors. The architect is MCG-5 Sports Architects, a joint venture between Daryl Jackson Architects, HOK Sport+Venue+Event, Cox Architects, Tompkins Shaw + Evans Architects and Hassell Architects. The engineering consultancy is another joint venture between Connell Mott MacDonald and Arup.
