A paper delivered in May at the BICSI South Pacific Conference and Exhibition in Sydney warned of fire risk in IT and communications networks. BICSI stands for Building Industry Consulting Service International Inc and is a US-based organisation, which also has representation in Australia and the UK. The paper was delivered by Peter Johnson, the national manager of fire engineering at Arup. Together with fellow author Bill Southwood, Arup's national manager of IT and communications, Johnson said fire in electrical cabling is one of the greatest dangers facing telecoms and internet systems. Cable fires have significantly disrupted communications systems and businesses in the US and other countries in the past 30 years, Johnson said.
