摘要

After the ousting of the regime of late Mobutu by the rebels led by Laurent Kabila in 1998, there was much hope that the Democratic Republic of the Congo (DRC), one of the richest countries in Africa in mining, farming and hydro power, would look after its own. In 2001, president Kabila was assassinated in his palace in the capital Kinshasa. His son Joseph Kabila took over. The 33-year-old major general, with assistance from the UN special contingency MONUC and neighbouring countries is shaping the fragile country slowly.
