The strong economies of the modern world are those that nurture and build upon skills in science, technology and engineering. Yet, Australia's levels of education in maths and science, the necessary precursors to that technical capability, have shrunk to alarming levels during the past 30 years. The legacy carries severe consequences, both for our economy and for our living standards. After all, the modern world is underpinned by science and technology, and a basic understanding of maths and science is an essential requirement just for the effective functioning for each of us in our day-to-day lives. Most of the items we routinely use are the products of scientific advances. Just look at what we have to choose from; there are IPods, remote controls, microwaves, DVD players, computers and a plethora of other high-tech devices facing us. In maintaining our medical care, how can we decide if a recommended medical treatment is right for us, if we do not understand the basics of the science of human health and the implications of some technology-based treatment? The list of modern technology in our community is seemingly endless. Even if only for the sake of convenience, a basic understanding of science is essential to help us operate within this array of technology.
