Towards an Australian sustainability charter

In May, Engineers Australia provided a submission to the House of Representatives Standing Committee on Environment and Heritage Inquiry into a Sustainability Charter. The intention to do this was signalled in an article in the April issue of this magazine. Several contributions were received and quite a number of members volunteered to comment on drafts. These contributions significantly improved the final submission. In the submission Engineers Australia argued that most definitions of sustainability derive from the Brundtland Report. Thus sustainable development is development that meets the need of the present without compromising the ability of future generations to meet their own needs.
