To assist elderly or disabled people, four new types of pneumatic rubber artificial muscle have been developed by a Japanese team led by Prof Toshiro Noritsugu, at the Graduate School of Natural Science and Technology, Okayama University. The new types represent improvements or refinements on commercially available pneumatic rubber artificial muscles: contracted linear type, extend- ed linear type, contracted curved type, and extended curved type.
