Rail duplication in fire ant territory

The lead story of this feature describes the duplication of the line between Corinda and Darra in Brisbane's west. Other stories report on current research projects, a feasibility study to upgrade a freight line in Western Australia and the tenth anniversary of the Railway Technical Society of Australasia. TrackStar Alliance is duplicating the suburban line between Corinda and Darra in Brisbane's west. The alliance comprises Thiess, United Group, Queensland Rail, Connell Wagner and Maunsell Australia. The $268 million project involves increasing the number of tracks from two to four, building a new rail bridge and additional platforms. Work is divided into 10 stages to avoid disrupting freight and passenger train services. The line is occasionally shut down over weekends so that work teams can access the track. The crux of the project is moving the existing tracks to one side of the corridor so that there is enough space for the new tracks.
