The two LHD (landing/helicopter/ dock) ships, for which BAE Systems Australia is the prime contractor, will be built in cooperation with Spanish shipbuilder Navantia, the designer of the vessels. The LHD's are now closer to realisation with the launch in March at Navantia's Ferrol yard of Juan Carlos 1. This ship, called a Buque de Pryeccion Estrategica (BPE), or strategic projection ship, will undergo trials later this year and is expected to be entered into service in the Spanish navy during 2009. Juan Carlos 1 will be the only LHD to be built for the Spanish Armada. It has been designed to complement the role of the country's single aircraft carrier Principe de Asturias.
