Dr charles harold warman was born in Kalgoorlie in 1910. His father and grandfather were both mining men who moved west from Ballarat in the Victorian gold fields. From the outset Charles Warman was destined to follow a career associated with mining. At age 14 he won a scholarship to the Western Australian School of Mines. Outstanding results maintained him in scholarships for full-time and part-time study through to his graduation in 1931. This was later followed by a short period as a lecturer at the school. His first job as a design draftsman in the engineering department of the Lakeview and Star Mine, then the largest gold mine in Australia, brought to Warman's attention the need for more reliable and longer wearing slurry pumps. He hit upon the idea of creating a slurry pump with replaceable liners, thereby significantly extending pump life.
