Wastewater plant for new suburb in Western Australia

A major new wastewater infrastructure project is set to underpin the future development of Perth's burgeoning northern corridor. Western Australian premier Alan Carpenter and water resources minister John Kobelke launched works on the $360 million project in the soon-to-be-created suburb of Alkimos. The Alkimos area is expected to become a significant regional centre with a population predicted to reach about 150,000 by 2030. Kobelke said the plant would ultimately have a capacity of 150ML/d of wastewater and would use advanced secondary treatment technology. In addition, 5km of main sewer is being constructed as an extension of the existing Quinns Main Sewer. Work is well advanced on tunnelling and open-trench construction to extend the line.
