While there is not yet much physical evidence of one of the biggest defence projects in Australia's history, beyond the tonnes of earth being moved and concrete being poured at the shipbuilding facility at Osborne, the Air Warfare Destroyer (AWD) Alliance is on target. The Alliance, headquartered at the AWD Systems centre in suburban Adelaide, comprises the Defence Materiel Organisation (DMO), ASC and Raytheon Australia. It will soon be ready to commission the fabrication of the first 21 to 29 (approximate quantities) modules for each ship, called "blocks", to start at various sites around the country in the third to fourth quarter 2009.
