Dale Cartwright (Engineers Australia, June 2009) was only partly right when he said that mechatronics is a discipline created by academics - its origins can be traced to Japan in the mid 1980s. However, mechatronic courses were introduced in response to industry lobbying. Employers wanted graduates with skills with computers and software who could bridge the widening gaps between mechanical and electrical engineering.
