Duplicate bridge opens in Brisbane

The second Gateway Bridge was officially opened last month, six months ahead of schedule. The event was open to the public, allowing pedestrians to walk across Brisbane's newest piece of road infrastructure.rnThe existing and the new bridge will now both be officially known as the Sir Leo Hielscher Bridges.rnLike its twin, the new bridge stands 64.5m at its highest point over the Brisbane River. It was constructed 50m downstream of the existing bridge and has the same shape, with the exception that it is 5m wider with the addition of a dedicated pedestrian and cycle way.rnThe new bridge used a twin box girder system to accommodate the extra width,rnrather than the single box design ot the old bridge.
